I’m getting up there in age. While I won’t reveal the number, allow me to illustrate with a fond memory:

My dad was always interested in gadgets. Mostly computers. But when I was about six or so, he bought a home movie camera.

This thing was shaped like a smallish, rectangular box with a metal handle underneath. On top was a light that was AS BRIGHT AS THE FRIGGIN SUN!

But in those days, if you had a home movie camera, it was a pretty big deal. My dad shot some footage of me, my sister, and my mother, then we waited a few weeks until we got the film back from development.

Like I said… I’m getting up there.

When we watched it that night on the projector, there I was, as white as a sheet and squinting to avoid permanent retinal damage from that hot-white orb.

What was I doing? I hope you’re sitting down. I was waving! Wait. It gets better. I also made my dog wave!

This was pretty much the norm for families who made the investment to obtain a home movie camera. You spent a lot of money, and got to rewatch your family do really lame crap later on.

Sure. Occasionally there were the trips to the Grand Canyon, where you could record your family waving in front of a lot of rocks.

But the, by today’s standards, lame footage wasn’t the point.

If you were able to record yourself on film, that was the show. It didn’t matter what you were doing. The fact that you could see yourself projected on a screen was pretty incredible.

That is definitely not the case today. People have cameras on their phones that are astronomically more advanced than the box with the miniature sun my dad had when I was six. With HD technology, you don’t even need additional lighting, for the most part.

My point is that video recording ain’t a big deal anymore. It’s literally as easy as whipping out your phone and pressing the red button.
